Most of us have experienced the fear of asking, whether it’s requesting a well-deserved raise or asking someone to buy your product or service. This fear can be paralyzing, preventing us from taking action.

By using this proven technique from Noah Kagan, the founder of AppSumo and author of Million Dollar Weekend, you can overcome that fear, make the ask, and finally get that raise or sell the product.

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”– Wayne Gretzky

Noah believes that the biggest barrier to business success isn’t a lack of strategy. It’s the fear of asking.

To overcome this, you need to develop your ‘ask muscle’ by practicing, especially when it feels uncomfortable.

Here’s how to start today:

Go to a coffee shop or anyplace in person, make a simple purchase, and ask for 10 percent off. Don’t say anything else. The whole point is for you to feel uncomfortable.
Commit to doing this today.
— Noah Kagan

After deciding to take on the Coffee Challenge myself, I headed to my gym’s café. As I walked up to the counter, I could feel the nerves kicking in, especially with three people standing behind me in line. But I went for it, ordered my smoothie, and asked for 10 percent off.

The barista gave me a quick glance and, with a slightly confused look, asked,

“Are you a founding member?” she asked.

“No” I replied.

“Do you have the active discount card?” she continued.

“Nope” I said.

“Then I can’t give you a discount, sorry” she concluded.

Despite the rejection, something unexpected stood out to me. The barista actually tried to find reasons to say yes.

This small gesture helped me realize that people are often more willing to help than we assume. We just need to ask.

Start building your ‘ask muscle’ today, and watch how overcoming this fear opens doors you never thought possible.

Don’t wait! Take the first step now.
