After a decade of chasing fitness goals, this is the most valuable lesson I’ve learned when it comes to losing fat and building muscle:

The real struggle is not a lack of progress, it’s steering clear of major setbacks

Back in 2021, I was fully commited to getting in shape. For six months straight, I was dialed in with my diet and training. By summer, my hard work had paid off, I had packed on 10 pounds of muscle and dropped down to 12% body fat. I was proud of my physique and felt like I’d truly earned my summer holidays.

But fast forward four weeks. After a couple of weeks in Europe and a chaotic schedule when I got back home, it was like I’d hit the reset button on all my progress.

That summer taught me that while progress feels great, it’s fragile if not protected. We can protect our progress by steering clear of the setbacks that wipe out months of hard work in just a few weeks.

These are the top 4 causes of major setbacks:

  • Injury/ Illness
  • Travel
  • The Holidays
  • Burnout/ Overtraining

We are all so focused on finding the next tips and tricks to speed up our progress when we really should be focusing on avoiding the common causes of setbacks.

Next time you set a goal, don’t just plan to make progress.

Plan to protect it.
